“I didn’t have to remove the oor on either of my Bays, but drilling out spot welds is a tedious, thankless task. I used these: https://www.machinemart. co.uk/.../clarke-cht685-spot.../ but go too fast with the drill and you’ll eat through them, other than that a good set of cobalt drills is a good investment.”

“Hi all, I’m looking for some troubleshooting tips. On the last couple of short trips in the van (a mile to the pub), I’ve noticed a strong smell of petrol from the right-hand (starter battery) side vent after driving. There’s no discernible petrol smell from the other side (and I’ve already replaced the short section of bad hose hidden there), and no smell the next day I have a 78 late bay with type 4 CJ engine and twin Solex carbs (standard setup).A couple of months ago I replaced the fuel lines from the carbs to the fuel lter and everything seems tight. I also took the opportunity to check behind the rewall. The previous owner had been in there and all hoses looked mint. I did some investigation this afternoon and revved the engine. I did smell petrol straight after revving, but couldn’t see any sign of leakage. It also wasn’t consistent. On tickover I smelled nothing, but the rst hard rev did bring on the petrol smell. I’m also getting pops on overrun. My heat exchangers are in very good condition. Anywhere obvious to start looking?
Nick Gillott replied the same day:
“Does it get better or worse or no di erent with a full or near empty tank? Suspect it isn’t the hose from the ller to tank, probably from fuel pump to carb, esp if you have popping”

“Had a cracking weekend away in Delilah our early bay, spoiled by her initially not starting on leaving the campsite to having a massive loss of power on hills which turned into lots of smoking from the engine bay, a split hose and an oil leak somewhere underneath the engine, eventually refusing to run. She’s tted with a type-4 2 litre engine and obviously in need of major engine work. Anyone recommend a good workshop near Gosport/Portsmouth now that Ginger’s VW has been forced out of business?”

“I hope you nd someone and if you do, please let us all know as I’m an ex Ginger too. I’ve been told there is one in Curbridge, but haven’t tried them and have no testimonies.

“Hi. I’ve used Francis Tuthill at Wardington near Banbury for the last 44 years on my 1971 Bay. Recently he replaced all main bearings etc. He specialises in VW and Porsche and runs his own Rally Team going all over the world with his team and support mechanics. It may be some way from you but I would thoroughly recommend him. After all, I’ve been a satis ed customer for 44 years. Hope this helps you or someone else.”

“Nearest one I know is 63 miles away in Poole - Kombi Klassics. Have used them on a number of occasions and recommend but nothing nearer.”
