Transporter Talk No 147
DON’T PANIC! ASK THE MECHANIC...
With classic car vehicle theft on the rise, classic car security systems are more important than ever.
Hi Members,
That was an interesting article in the May/June Issue about securing your pride and joy.
I’ve owned my VW for 45 years and for 40 years I have visited Dartmoor 4-6 times every year and spent 6-8 hours walking all over the Moor (Letterboxing). This meant I had to leave my VW alone and exposed.
To deter thieves I used the following methods:
1 Buy a cycle lock and secure your sliding door to the passenger door.
2 I bought 1m of thick chain and two good padlocks. The chain is permanently xed and located through the gaps under the passenger seat with the other end fed and locked through the steering wheel.
3 I bought two sets of sticker lettering to create two signs that read:
“WARNING – ALARMED VEHICLE”.
4 I bought a 1m length of 25mm x 25mm aluminium angle which I tted at the rear tailgate by drilling through and into the engine bay. I also bought a short piece of slotted angle which I cut to shape and drilled and tted onto each end of the tail gate. I then married up the closed tailgate to the aluminium, drilled two holes so I could t 2BA screws and nuts, thereby permanently locking the tailgate to the body of the van. A ddly task, but essential when leaving your vehicle in isolated areas of Dartmoor for 8 hours a day.
5 I also bought a dual“Siren & Flashing Beacon” activated by an infra-red security system I designed and built. It sits prominently in the front window.
Hope this gives members some useful tips. Yours Sincerely
Ian Crawford
