Transporter Talk No 147
DON’T PANIC! ASK THE MECHANIC... continued
Lastly, following some discussions at the JK Weekend about Vehicle Tax on our beloved Campers, The Mechanic has decided to share some news about some recent changes that have been made to Historic Vehicle Tax Regulations.
The DVLA has changes concerning the entitlement to free road tax. Don’t worry, they’re not getting rid of the rolling entitlement for vehicles 40yrs old or greater, but they have tightened up on the rules which previously allowed owners of vehicles made in the previous year, but not registered until the next.

When the historic vehicle exemption was rst introduced, the DVLA intended to grant free road tax to vehicles based on when they were rst registered. However if an owner could provide proof of build date via a ‘birth certi cate’, then a note would be made on the V5C and they could qualify for free Vehicle Excise Duty.
The recent changes mean this will no longer be the case and for 1976-on vehicles, Historic Vehicle road tax will be determined only by the date of registration. The DVLA blames a new system of registration from 1976/77, whereby a vehicle was declared as ‘new and unused’ when rst registered.
Vehicles that already qualify for free road tax shouldn’t be a ected.
Don’t forget that if you have
a question for the mechanic, no matter how silly or tricky the question seems, The Mechanic can come to your rescue and you may be helping out other members.
