Welcome to Transporter Talk 197
October saw a reunion of my teammates from Microsoft for a catch-up dinner, the first time we have met since losing our colleague Els after 29 years at the firm, at just 59. October also saw me drive from home to Holmfirth to Glasgow, then to Cambridge and finally to Nottingham to see my favourite band Magnum (no, I know you’ve never heard of them) perform a tribute to their lead guitarist and sole songwriter who passed away last year after 52 years of writing 23 albums, and playing in the band. On the way up to Holmfirth, Chairman Malcolm called me to share the news that club management team member Bob Ward had passed away. Bob joined the team in autumn 2011 after Maggie stepped into the Secretary role that summer and the two of them have helped the team shape the club from then until now.
Bob and Maggie were the ones who probably greeted you into the club field at Busfest most years, Bob leaning on his stick, smiling and a twinkle in his eyes, chatting to members around the club marquee. You’ll be missed by us all Bob.
With Maggie having been Secretary since the summer of 2011, that makes her the longest tenured Secretary in the 34 years of the club.
The majority of the team gathered in a Cotswold village to discuss the 2026 events, logistics and all manner of other things to help move your club forwards. It was a little deflated without Bob and Maggie, and wearing Christmas jumpers in October was both odd and rather warm. Most of us changed quickly as the quantity of nylon was a potential fire hazard!
A review of 2025 showed that we had our best club year with brilliant feedback from members, and we look forward to welcoming you to events next year.
