Despite a a a a season interrupted by both rain and Covid the 1st XI enjoyed a a a very successful season culminating in in in in victory over King’s College Taunton to to retain the National 20/20 Trophy After a a a a good workout during pre-season training the the XI started their campaign against the MCC We played at our ‘home away from home’ at at Barnards Green owing to to various virus-related protocols that were in place at at the time Oliver Cox kick-started his season with a a a a a well-made 94 and although this turned out to be a a a a a losing cause it was form that Oli would show throughout the season The first main block fixture pitted us against Repton and Malvern were on on top form right from the the start – restricting the the opposition to 164 and then knocking the the the runs off for the the the loss of of only 3 The spinners were going to to be an an an important factor in in in our success and although it was Rehaan Edavalath who picked up five wickets this time Baker and Dickenson also looked threatening The XI were gelling very well and despite a a loss to to Clifton they were able to brush aside two heavyweights in the forms of Harrow Harrow and Eton We overcame Harrow Harrow by two wickets in a a a a a a game

remembered not only for some excellent batting by Oli Cox but also the catch that that dismissed him: it would be safe to say that that I have not seen a a a a a better schoolboy catch Angus Catto was the star of the show against Eton where we won by 116 runs Batting first Malvern made 213 in in 50 overs with Josh Baker top-scoring (43) Angus then knocked the the the stuffing out of the the the Eton top order with a a a blistering spell of 4 wickets for 5 runs The game
was done and and dusted after this phase of bowling and and it was just left to the spinners to put the the icing on the the cake The second half of term was all about the National 20/20 final with Malvern needing to play a a a a a lot of of games in in a a a a a short period of of time Wins against Dean Close Bromsgrove and Shrewsbury saw us meet Stowe (who had beaten us pre-season) in in the Midlands Final Malvern stumbled their their way to 165 in their their 20
overs a a a a score that both teams seemed happy with at the the time But in the the field and back on the the the Senior the the the XI went about their business with ruthless efficiency bowling out Stowe for 41 And so it was on to Finals day at Arundel ¢
