ABBERLEY ADVENTURES

Outdoor Education
During Outdoor Ed the children have been sowing seeds and seedlings, making dandelion tea and cooking wild garlic bread. The herb garden is doing brilliantly and there are promising signs that the beetroots and carrots will do well. Serious vigilance has been required due to the threat from rabbits and slugs. There have been three separate biking sessions taking place on Saturday mornings as well as some exciting and popular Bushcraft activities, which have seen Mr Scott returning to Abberley to lend his expertise alongside Mr Bennett-Tomlin. Abberley is famous for its love of the great outdoors and for its spectacular grounds and the Summer term is the best time to enjoy ‘the great outdoors’. Please could boarders bring sleeping bags back after Half Term to allow impromptu camp outs.
Music, Art and Drama
The Art and the Design Technology departments have been as busy as ever this term with children enjoying these facilities during their lessons, Evening Activities and also during their free time. The photo shows a collage of designs produced for the Royal Mail’s Heroes Stamp Design competition. Entrants had to design a stamp based on their hero of the pandemic. As well as NHS workers, pupils thought about key workers, Captain Tom, their dogs and nature. The winning design will be published as one of eight stamps by Royal Mail. Good luck to all who entered!
Children in Years 3 and 4 were sadly denied their annual trip to the Panto this year due to Covid. However, they did not let this dampen their spirits. Throughout the term, they worked very hard with Mrs Eynon and Mr Dunham to produce the fantastic performance of Panto Pandemonium that the rest of the school was able to enjoy before breaking up for Half Term. The production was viewed, in bubbles, in the Ashton Hall and at home via the live link. The Palace children took us through the wonderful world of the Panto and helped a wicked witch, who had locked Mme BB into a cupboard, come into the light. Before that the children travelled through the Pantoland door and visited the scenes of Cinderella, Snow White and the cheeky Seven Dwarves, Alladin and Jack and the Beanstalk, with the not very tall Giant. The solos and group singing and dancing were fabulous. But let’s not forget the audience, who, with their enthusiastic boos and hisses and their exclamation of deep joy at the final reunion of Moo and Tail made the whole show an experience to remember.
This performance helped us to remember what a delight the various year group drama productions are when a live audience is there to enjoy them. We cannot wait for parents and extended family and friends to be able to return to our productions in the near future.
