Since I’m reluctant to drill holes, I’ve never installed built-in speakers in Beryl. Instead, I’ve relied on a Bluetooth speaker magnetically attached under the dash, paired with a touchscreen device mounted via suction. This setup connects to my phone for music, navigation, and hands-free calls.
We rarely use the space between the front seats to access the living area, so I saw the perfect opportunity to create a practical storage unit.
I wanted it to include:
• Cup holders
• Storage space
• A built-in Bluetooth speaker
• A padded top to double as a footstool or extra seat in camp mode
• A design that blends seamlessly with the original interior
After taking measurements and sketching out my design, I built the unit from lightweight plywood and covered it in vinyl to match our seats. I entrusted the padded plaid top to my upholsterer for a perfect finish.
For the cup holder, I repurposed one from a Subaru—it was the perfect size! I painted it with colour-matched vinyl paint to blend with the interior.
Inside, I lined the storage area with a contrasting flock material, which not only looks great but also helps absorb noise from stored items.
A motion-sensing light activates when the lid is opened, while soft-close hinges ensure it shuts gently. The entire unit is designed around the speaker, which is angled to direct sound up and forward.
I wanted storage that was both functional and looked like it had always been part of Beryl’s interior. I think I’ve nailed it!
