DON’T PANIC! ASK THE MECHANIC
Sound Deadening by Mark Broad-Holcombe
Butterfly Mind
I was supposed to be trying to source the parasitic battery drain we were experiencing on the T6 but as the title suggests I constantly flit from one job to another. Probably why I never finish anything plus I'm one of life's procrastinators.
Back to the van. Whilst dismantling various bits of bodywork and trim I decided to kill two birds with one stone and knock a few jobs off of the list. The first was to run some cables through the bulkhead to the van battery to allow me to charge it via the dashtop solar trickle charger plus an extension cable for a mains charger for when on EHU. Both of which are a definite necessity until the battery drain is sourced. T his was easy as there are a couple of access holes with grommets in the bulkhead behind the battery which I have already used for the auxiliary battery fitted under the drivers seat.
Secondly. I have read in the past that it is advantageous to sound deaden the scuttle between the engine bay and dash. I had a couple of sheets of Dodo mat sound deadening left from lining the interior so decided to go for it as best I could without removing the plastic scuttle cover because this involves removing the wiper blades. After all I was supposed to be finding a battery drain! As best as I could in the tight space, I panel wiped all metal to be covered in sound deadening which was cut to fit various parts of the scuttle and pressed, and rollered in place. The finished result was a bit rough and I couldn't reach all areas I'd have liked to but by all accounts, you only need to cover about 50% of the panel. Any more than that and the sound deadening affect is negligible.
Haven't taken the van for a drive yet to test the results. More pressing things to do; that battery drain. Ooh look a squirr...
