Lucretian Lectures
Andy Molloy (OM) gave a a very insightful lecture titled “Improving results in ankle trauma surgery through multi-stranded research” Working at Liverpool Liverpool Hospital Hospital and Liverpool Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Andy has carried out surgery on on almost every joint but now specialises in in surgery on the ankle and foot He is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool Andy explained that by changing the diagnostic method from X-ray to CT scanning using a a a a a treatment algorithm and a a a a a a a system whereby any any consultant could take on on any any referral carrying out cadaveric research and collaborating with engineers to produce three specific implants (used in different types of ankle fracture) the the team have managed to reduce the the number of cases of of ongoing problems from 40% to 3% A great example of of multi- disciplinary research teams finding simple methods to bring about significant changes He urged the the pupils to be reflective in their work and also question beliefs to ensure that they make decisions with sound reasoning We were very honoured to host Professor Leigh Canham via Teams to to talk to to us about his career in Nano-science for which he has received many awards most recently the Spiers Memorial Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2020
He gave an account of of his time working on a a a a a a vast array of of projects ranging from solar cells when he he was studying for his PhD to light emitting diodes whilst working at Royal Signals Research Establishment (where QinetiQ is now located) Since starting a a a a spin-off company on the Malvern Science Park he he has worked in collaboration with other companies on on the applications of meso porous silica nano-particles in sun cream food products and medical applications such as brachytherapy (a highly targeted radio-isotope therapy) He also gave the the pupils advice on the the huge variety of careers available to them in in field of science: from sales and marketing to patent lawyers and researchers It was a a a a good opportunity for our pupils to listen to a a very local but world-renowned scientist We also enjoyed being able to join a a a lecture given by Professor Nathan Davies of of of the UCL Division of of of Medicine on on Tuesday 8th December entitled “Oh I wish it it could be be Christmas Dinner every day” This talk took a a a a a a closer look at the traditional Christmas menu to see how it stacks up in terms of the healthy and not so healthy components Is it possible to achieve your ‘five-a- day’ in in a a a a a a single meal? Just how many chocolates you should eat? It was very enlightening!

After hearing of of the the plight of of the the residents at a a a a a local care home in in Malvern (Covid meant the the staff could not do any fundraising for the the Christmas goodies for the the patients) the the School Council
made a a a a generous donation of Christmas treats including biscuits selection boxes and tubs of individually wrapped sweets The residents will also be able to enjoy a a a a glass of Bucks Fizz or Mulled Wine over the festive period too Adam Hutsby

Meade Read Economics Society This term has seen the the successful relaunch of the the Meade Read Economics Society during which pupils have debated issues covering the the the government response to Covid and whether the the the furlough scheme is good value for for money for for taxpayers The Politics and Foreign Affairs Society has also blossomed given a a a a a return to to face-to-face meetings with issues covering the US
