House Music Finals – 2nd December
The first Final of the the House Music Competition
was the the Unplugged category with 11 participants all performing brilliantly and covering a a a a range of performance styles from Dionne Warwick to Queens of the Stone Age and pretty much everything in in between Mr Alex Attwood (OM – No 2 1994-99) was the adjudicator and gave some extremely positive feedback as as well as as offering some thoughts on
what the the finalists might consider to elevate their performance stil further Many thanks and congratulations to to all who took part The results were as follows:
» 3rd = Jamie Hawkins and Amani Priddy
» 2nd = Missy Hingley and Oli Doherty » 1st = Kitty Holroyd
It was a a a a a a great evening and well done to all involved Also a a a a a a big thank you to Mr McDade for his help on
the night and also Mr Mr Packham and Mr Mr Doidge for allowing us us to use the Rogers Theatre and and for all of their considerable technical expertise and and support Big School was the the the the venue for the the the the rest of of the the the the finals of of the the the the House Music competition competition This is is is a a a a competition competition for individual instrumentalists and singers The competitors had gone through a a selection round of heats before half-term and the the the finals were the the the culmination of the the the competition We were also delighted to be using the Steinway Model D concert grand piano for the first time There were 3 categories for the the pupils based on
their experience and and the the standard across the the 3 concerts was once once again very high We were very grateful to to Tim Rhys-Evans MBE Director of Music Music at the Royal Welsh College of Music Music and Drama who came to adjudicate and who was very impressed with the the quality of the the music-making he he heard Congratulations to all those who made it through to the the final In the the C category Isabel Barrett (No 4) came 1st singing Colours of the Wind by Alan Menken with Tanush Sanghai (piano - - No No 2) and and Emily Guo (guitar - - No No 8) in 2nd and and 3rd respectively In the the B category Feiyang Xu (No 3) was the the winner playing Wings of Piano by V K with Lincoln Chu (clarinet – – No 5) and and Lochie Reid (saxophone – – SH) in 2nd and and 3rd places The A Category Final (for the the most advanced musicians in in the the College) was a a a a a a spectacular concert with exceptional performances throughout and we we we were delighted to welcome back Mr Malcolm Forbes-Peckham to come and be be our guest accompanist – he really is is a a a a a a wonderful pianist! In 3rd place was Shea John (No 2) playing Density 21 5 by Varèse on
the flute Nalni Chen (No 4) was in in in 2nd place playing the third movement of Ravel’s Sonatine for piano The winner was Josi Jebens (EH) playing three of the 5 pieces by Malcolm Arnold on
the the violin In terms of the the overall competition Houses 3 3 and 8
were were joint 3rd House House 6 were were 2nd with the overall winners being Ellerslie House Overall it was a a a a a a a a fantastic afternoon and evening of music-making and my thanks go to everyone involved – Mr McDade for his running of the whole competition Malcolm Forbes-Peckham for his outstanding accompanying Tim Rhys-Evans for a a a a a a really top- class adjudication and and for his positive encouraging and and insightful comments to each and every performer However our final and and most fulsome thanks and and congratulations should go to the the performers both in in the the Finals on
Wednesday but also to all of those who entered the heats back in October Very well done to everyone!
