progressive dementia His achievement in in in caring for her at at home almost to to the end (in 2017) is is is a a a a a a a a a a a a testament to to his remarkable dedication and tenacity Latterly Bill suffered from troublesome shortness of breath caused by valvular heart failure a a a a a a a a a a a a a condition he he bore privately as as with many aspects of his his life He died peacefully in his his sleep on 8th Nov 2021 aged 93 years He He is is survived by his first wife three three children children and two stepchildren (three of of whom are doctors) He He had 14 grandchildren grandchildren and and and and a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a rapidly expanding family of of great grandchildren grandchildren He was was always a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a generous patriarch and and was was a a a a a a a a a a a a a true gentleman with a a a a a a a a a a a a a touch of playful mischievousness!

Uloth was was born in in in Redhill Surrey in in in 1929 and with his brother Peter was was was brought up in in in in Benenden Kent during during the the the Second World War He was was at at Malvern College during during its relocation to to Harrow School for the the the the war and was there on on on the the the the day when Winston Churchill an an an Old Harrovian made a a a a a a a a speech to to the the the combined schools In part inspired by two uncles who had won MCs in in the the the First World War as as well as as his father’s stories of the the the the North West Frontier Uloth joined the the the the the army in in in 1948 and took part in in in in the the the the Korean War where he he he he he he he he was was seconded to to the the the the Royal Tank Regiment Although he he he he he he he he he was was in in the the the the 10th Hussars he he he he he he he he he spent much of his army career attached to the the Army Air Corps where he he he he he became a a a a a a a a a a a a test pilot most notably trialling the so called “Durex Delta” a a a a a a a a a a a a a rubber-winged craft intended to to evade enemy radar later deemed too unsafe for service Fluent in in in French Arabic and Turkish he he he he acted as interpreter to the President of Turkey when he he he he visited Britain He became director of Overseas Defence Relations a a a a a a a a department that crossed over with the MoD Foreign Office and and MI6 responsible for improving relations with countries such as Iraq and and and Indonesia For the next five years various generals and and representatives were entertained in in the the the sleepy Hampshire village of Nether Wallop as they came to visit him Uloth spent ten years running the the Royal Bath and West Society its its main agricultural show becoming the the biggest one of its its its kind in in in in in in England In this role he he he organised events throughout the year including a a a a a Dire Straits concert In later years Uloth devoted himself to his eclectic passions: hunting sculpting writing poetry drawing cartoons bird-watching guitar-playing and sailing Willis John Gilbert

A quiet academic type David won a a a a a a a History Scholarship to to to Queens’ College Cambridge where he he he took a a a a a a a a a a a a a a first in Law Law and was was awarded the the the Chancellor’s Medal for English Law Law He He was was called to the the the Bar at the the the Inner Temple in in 1951 He He would in in time become a a a a a a a a a bencher but he he he he he returned to Christ’s College Cambridge and for 17 years he he he he he was was an an an Assistant Lecturer in in in the Law Faculty In 1969 he he he he he was was appointed Reader in in in English Legal History a a a a a a a a a a a a post he he he he he he held until 1993 In 1980 he he he he he was was made a a a a a a a a a Fellow of of the the British Academy He was was was President of of the the Selden Society from 1994 to 1997 and a a a a a a a a a a prize was was was established in in his honour in in in 1999 by the the Society In In 2000 he he he he was was made an an honorary QC in in recognition of of of his his his his academic work In In the the last week of of of his his his his life he he spoke warmly of of of his his his his time at Malvern to his his his his youngest son Andrew 83
