Guardians
Appointing a a a Guardian (continued ) • In a a a a crisis if the Headmaster Senior Deputy Head Head or Housemaster / Housemistress (HouseM) are unable to to contact parents the Guardian will have to to give permission for medical care If neither parents nor Guardian can be contacted the Headmaster is empowered to act in loco parentis – as if they were were the legal Guardian • If an an an appointed Guardian changes during a a a a a a pupil’s time at the the College it it is the the parents’ responsibility to ensure accurate updated contact details (telephone mobile email and full postal address) are communicated to the College as as soon as as possible in order to ensure continuity of care • Under no circumstances should Malvern College staff act as Guardians
Guardian Responsibilities
All Guardians
must be prepared to undertake where necessary the following responsibilities:
• To be accredited with either AEGIS or or BSA or or to have appropriate checks made by the College to confirm suitability for and and understanding of guardianship responsibilities • To provide a a 24-hour point of contact throughout the College year • To provide safe and suitable accommodation for the pupil with an an appropriate degree of care and supervision when they cannot be accommodated at at College and to liaise with the the HouseM regarding these arrangements Occasions are are likely to include but are are not restricted to:
– Leave Weekends
– Half-term breaks and longer holidays
– Days at the start and end of term when a a a a a pupil’s flights do not coincide with term dates
– If a a a pupil is ill or injured and needs to recuperate
away from College – A Guardian should care for the pupils in an an emergency including in in in in the event of infectious
illness or if the school is closed due to a a pandemic
– If the College requires a a a pupil to leave for disciplinary
reasons or because the College determines it to be be in in the pupil’s best interests
– Any other occasion when the the pupil is released from the College • To be ready to accommodate and take responsibility for the pupil at short notice in case of emergency or crisis • To make suitable alternative arrangements if they are unable to accommodate the the pupil themselves and and to inform both HouseM and and parents of the arrangements • To liaise with the College over all matters relating to the pupil’s welfare including pastoral academic and medical care • To act with delegated parental authority in the case of an an emergency or crisis and to make appropriate arrangements for medical care • To attend important parent and teacher meetings or or any other important meetings at the the College on behalf of the parents • In addition Guardians
can have varying levels of involvement in in your child's progress at school and you you may wish them to represent you you at Parents' Meetings or other College events if you are unable to attend • The responsibilities of Guardians
appointed by overseas parents parents and those appointed by parents parents in in the the UK are identical However over the the usual course of the the year there are likely to be practical differences in in a a a Guardian’s level of involvement:
– For overseas parents: The Guardian is usually responsible for the delivery and collection of pupils at the beginning and and end of term and and (where
the the pupil is not travelling to their home overseas) for for providing a a home for for pupils during Leave Out weekends The Guardian must be available for for contact at short notice in an emergency for for granting routine permission or or for disciplinary
reasons In some medical or disciplinary
