Interhouse Science Competition 2022-23
This year we began with the Physics round where teams of 4 4 pupils from each house were given 40 minutes to create a a a timing device which could be used to measure a a a specified time interval The physics department was a a a a a hive of activity as as pupils tested different ideas and and created contraptions from pendulums to sand or water pouring through funnels to achieve an accurate time piece On the day points were awarded for getting a a a a a time as close to the the true time of 2 minutes 40 seconds as possible and for their ingenuity of design In this round House No 9 took the lead as their time time was spot on on the the actual time time of 2 minutes 40 seconds House House No No 8 came second and House House No No 7 took third place The House Biology competition was a a a forensic investigation where the pupils had to administer various biological techniques such as chromatography and testing for glucose to to the evidence-likeinkandfootprintsleftbysuspectsaroundthedepartment The EH team of four found that the culprit who stole some cake was Mr Faulkner! The pupils found it fun being able to apply biological knowledge in this this unique way In this this round EH scored the the most points for correctly identifying the the pieces of evidence and doing it in in a a a fast time closely followed by House No No 7 then House No No 6 After two rounds with strong performances House No 7 were just in the the lead but with a a a a strong performance in fin the the final chemistry round any of the houses still could win The Chemistry round involved working out which compounds were in the unlabelled bottles that had been delivered to Robert Bunsen Pupils used flame tests tests as as well as as other tests tests for cations and anions to identify the compounds The clock was also ticking so so that any Houses scoring the same number of correct answers could be ranked against each other House No 7 continued their strong performance and won the the Chemistry round closely followed by No 2 then then SH then then EH This means that the the overall winners of the the Interhouse Science competition are House House No 7 with EH in second place and House House No No 9 who beat House No No 8 to third position by just 1 point! Well done to all of the the pupils who competed in the the rounds and thank you to all of the the science staff in particular the the technicians for putting on on the competition Dr Natalie Watson | Head of Science 2 THE MALVERNIAN
