MEMBER'S MOTOR
Later in the morning, I dashed outside and changed the spark plugs for a new (gapped) set and started the engine. It fired-up first turn of the key. When warm, sounded good. No whistling! Took the van for a test run. Power seemed to be restored. Again, no 'popping' down hill, no whistling. Took the van around the town. Seems ok, although the idle speed could do with taking down a bit. Returned home and made an idle speed adjustment. Took off again down the A30, to give the van a bit of a blast. Seems ok so far. Returned home again feeling smug and in need of a coffee.
All in all, my work to find a fault had forced me to do some overdue adjustments to the engine. I do like to check the valve gaps a couple of times a year. The fan belt was a good check. You don't want that failing on the road. That happened to me about 15 years ago and it was a nightmare. Simple fix, but not on the M5 with lorries missing me by what seemed like inches.
Time will tell if I have really fixed this problem. If the cylinder heads were removed, it would not have been a waste of time. I'm sure my heads would have benefitted from a clean and internal inspection.
I hope this article has been useful to others who may experience a similar problem.
