TRIBUTE TO TED
We recently received the sad news that a long standing member of the Club, Ted Hayes, passed away on 9th September 2016. Ted and his wife, Sue, bought their campervan, ‘Vanny’, in the early 90’s during a year in the USA where Ted took part in a teacher exchange in Lincoln, Nebraska. Ted was a craft teacher originally and loved woodwork and metalwork. He had made 2 kit cars that were used for many years and he loved caring for the family’s VW camper. The couple’s two young daughters went to Elementary school whilst in the USA and they decided to buy a VW camper as their vehicle for the year. This allowed the family to plan weekends away and to see as much of the country as they could, including a six week trip west around many of the National Parks, Las Vegas, San Francisco and many other places. Ted and Sue planned to sell the van in Lincoln before travelling back to England but the family had fallen in love with it so they decided to bring it home!
Ted and Sue joined the club soon after they brought the VW over to England and Ted always enjoyed receiving the magazine to see what tips there were for maintaining and renovating their T2. The beautiful ‘Vanny’ has needed very little work, except for a new engine during a family trip to Northern Spain where Ted had to convince the insurers that the 1974 campervan was ‘of value’ and worth recovering back to the UK!
Ted and Sue’s campervan has been used less in recent years but has made appearances for weddings including their own daughter’s, where ‘Vanny’ took centre stage!
Ted maintained his campervan very well and it is still in great condition – being the second owners with the original documents! Sue has said that she will be keeping their much loved camper, at least for the time being. We would like to send our best regards to Ted’s family and wish them many more happy memories with ‘Vanny’.
