Alcohol is served to Sixth Form pupils in College under certain circumstances. Responsible consumption of alcohol by Sixth Form pupils is considered part of a rounded social education. For example, wine may be served to Sixth
Form pupils at certain dinners during the school year. Alcohol is also served at the Sixth Form Centre ‘Longy’ (see below). Strict school rules are in place for unauthorised possession or consumption of alcohol and particular rules are in place for alcoholic spirits in recognition of the potential dangers. The Life Skills programme covers alcohol and its effects, and House staff keep a close eye on pupils. All Houses have a breathalyser and House staff may carry out pupil room searches. Alcohol is served on Saturday nights at the Sixth Form Social Centre (‘Longy’) under strict controls. 18-year-olds may request a ‘pub chit’ from their HouseM on Saturday evenings. If House staff have concerns about pupil alcohol consumption, then pupils may
be sent to the Medical Centre and parents will be informed.
Sixth Form Centre Club or ‘Longy’
Pupils joining the Sixth Form are invited to join the Sixth Form Centre Club. For many years,
this took place in the Long Room, hence the name, ‘Longy’. However, it is now located in a dedicated area below the Music School and comprises a dance floor with DJ booth and modern sound and lighting systems, bar area, table-football, pool and chill-out rooms. It is open on Saturday evenings from 7.30pm and pupils must return to Houses by 10.30pm. Parents are invited to pay for alcohol in advance and pupils cannot be served unless parents have given permission and paid. Pupils are breathalysed upon arrival at Longy and they also need to swipe their student card. Lower Sixth pupils may be served up to two alcoholic drinks and this limit is usually reviewed and increased to three during the course of the Lower Sixth year.
