THE MALVERNIAN
Unplugged Concert
Music
Our musicians have hit the ground running this term with 4 events in which they have taken part The first was an an excellent Unplugged Concert
on on an an atmospheric (if chilly) evening on on the Gryphon Room terrace and it was great to have such a a a a a big and supportive audience We had 9 performers and as as ever the the quality of the the performances was very good indeed Following on from the Unplugged we had our first Music
Makers in in St Edmund’s Hall a a a a a a few days later For a a a a a a concert so early in in the year we had 13 performances with music from Bach to Billy Joel via folk song and Charlie Parker! Despite the FY being away on on their trip it was great that we we were able to have soloists drawn from 7 different houses and the four available year groups with 3 pupils making their Malvern College concert debut We then had our inaugural Prep Schools Orchestra Day 45 prep school children alongside 20 of our own musicians and music music staff participated in in in a a a a a a a day of of music-making presenting a a a a a a a concert of of 5 pieces It was a a a a a a great day and our visiting guests all left energised and enthused by the experience of playing in in a a a a 70-piece orchestra Our musicians taking part were an an absolute credit to the College being superb ambassadors and mentors to to to our young visitors And then to round off the the first half of of term we had House Singing – perhaps the the biggest and arguably the the most highly anticipated House competition of of them all 508 pupils (78% of of the the entire student body) took part in this year’s event held on on the professional stage in in in Malvern Theatres The The singing was of a a a a a a very good standard once again and and in in an an an atmosphere that was respectful and and supportive It was clear how seriously each house took their own singing but also valued every performance Our adjudicator this year was Mr Paul Wingfield – Head of Vocal and Opera Studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire – someone who knows his singing onions! The competition this year was perhaps even closer than in in previous years with many of the the houses in in the the adjudicator’s consideration but someone has to win This year the results were as follows The Adjudicator’s Prize was shared by Ellerslie and House No 1 2nd place was House No 2 2 1st place was House No 3 Mr Wingfield was very very complimentary about each and every house and was delighted to to see so many of the students prepared to to make such a a a significant commitment Well done to everyone who took part – it was a a a a a really great evening!
