Boating Knots: Stoppers
Ashley’s stopper Knot

When knots that surround the standing part of
a line, such as overhands and figure 8 knots, are
too small, Ashley’s stopper knot does the job. By
bringing the working end back into play before
the final tightening, a knot of satisfactory bulk
is created that will be useful in sailing and other
activities. Clifford W. Ashley, author of The Ashley
Book of Knots, created this knot.

ing end through the loop. Then
tighten the noose by pulling on
the standing part to create the
three overlapping strands, as
