Data Analysis
Data is everywhere around us and
new data is created every time we
browse the internet, complete a survey
or go shopping.
• To make sense of data we need
statistics. Using mathematics,
we can convert a large collection
of numbers – all of which are Building Bridges
meaningless on their own – into
very accurate information
about the system which created Finance and Banking
the data. Statistics can also tell
us if certain findings are valid or In financial mathematics, traders can buy
significant. or sell stocks in a company commodities like
oil and gold or derivatives which are “virtual”
goods whose prices are derived from the
change of other things.
• For example, you can buy options
which could allow you to buy or sell a
stock at a particular price at some
point in the future – if you still want to
at that time.

Building Bridges
Engineers need mathematics to
construct stable bridges that can
withstand wind, as well as
Finance and Banking
vibrations caused by driving or walking.
