K-POP lovers...
There is another dance club available to those who seek inspiration in Korean music and idols. Limelight Dance Crew is a K-
Pop Dance Club based at the University of Waterloo. Created in 2015, they have grown tremendously in size, o ering weekly
dance tutorial sessions and they are known for their wonderful K-Pop dance covers on YouTube. Azalea Hu, a first year Health
Studies student at the University of Waterloo, is a member of Limelight Dance Crew and is delighted to share her experience
as a club member on campus.
"I’ve known and heard about Limelight even before I commenced school here at the University of Waterloo. I have been a
dedicated K-pop fan since 2012, and dance has slowly been a major form of stress relief for me. I was never a sports person,
but I knew I was passionate in dance. This prompts me to begin self-teaching myself the various dances that the Korean idols
choreographed in their music videos. When I discovered about Limelight Dance Crew at Waterloo, I was super excited to join
them knowing that I would be sharing so many things in common with my fellow crew members. We all love K-pop, we all
fanboy/fangirl over our idols and most of all, we all love to dance. I have participated in five dance performances on campus
so far, and although it is extremely stressful to dedicate additional time from school to attend all those practices, it is certainly
worth it for me, because it is quite an experience. We hold dance tutorials every Friday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and during
every session we have a leader teaching a male group song and another leader teaching a female group song. We are known
for our frequent dance covers on YouTube, where we upload videos regularly for the public to view and appreciate our love for
K-pop music. People appreciate our performances as we carry delightful images; however, they are shocked that we major in
Maths, CS, Engineering, etc. We emphasize the importance of practicing your hobby, even if school is a major barrier in
accomplishing what you enjoy doing. Despite the stressful times dedicated to studying at UW, we always take time to plan out
our tutorial sessions and film dance videos for our viewers to watch. I am looking forward to expand our dance community and
I am beyond excited for the many upcoming performances as well as dance covers that are yet to come."
