Reflections of A Life Well Lived
Good afternoon and God’s peace to all of you.
I am Skip’s dad, Albert. I met Curtis about 16 years ago after Skip called me about the availability of a
hunting lease outside of Homer. After seeing the property, I leased it and began getting ready for the
upcoming deer season. Skip introduced me to his neighbor and long-time friend since the early 1990’s.
His name was “Moon” and he was known by everyone in the community. I soon learned that
“Moon’s” birth first name was Curtis and I decided that I would call him Curtis out of respect. Curtis
was very personable and down to earth. He made me feel right at home and suggested that I set up my
camper-trailer on his property. Little did I know how rewarding that introduction would become.
Throughout the years, Curtis and I became good friends and would spend hours during the hunting
season talking about hunting, family, and just life in general, either in his trailer or under the shade of
his big pecan trees - Curtis did most of the talking and I would listen. I really enjoyed his stories of
living and working in Alaska. While in Alaska, Curtis specialized in the tourism business, including
everything from transportation, food services, and guiding - making people happy. Curtis must have
been pretty good because he said he received GOOD tips and had return customers.
Since my home is in Texas, 300+ miles from Homer, I would arrive at the deer lease a few days before
the start of hunting season and would stay until the week of Thanksgiving. During the past couple of
years while Curtis was enduring chemo treatments, our conversations extended beyond our face-to-
face talks during the hunting season to include phone calls following each treatment throughout the
rest of the year.
One of the highlights of each deer season for me was the celebration of Curtis’ birthday on November
16. Curtis and I would go to his favorite Mexican restaurant, Pepe’s, in Minden. Curtis always
enjoyed the hot sauce and chips, and would order enchiladas del Norte and iced tea - year after year
after year. We were able to celebrate his 90th birthday last year, again at Pepe’s. It was really a
GREAT day!!!
Curtis also looked forward to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays - my wife, Lynne, usually
baked mini-loaves of pumpkin bread for family and friends and always made sure that Curtis would
get his fair share. Curtis really liked those loaves of pumpkin bread, especially with Philadelphia
cream cheese. He always had a big smile when he saw me bringing him that pumpkin bread.
Cancer may have taken Curtis’ life, but I will remember him as the great special friend that he was.
REST IN PEACE, my friend…
