multimedia program. You can insert photographs, clip art, objects, charts, sounds, and movies. There’s even
a little bit of animation—entrances and exits, growing and shrinking, and spinning—that you can attach to any object or text element.
If you work on a PC, then Adobe Premier is your best choice for a true video-editing program that will also handle slide shows and sound tracks.
PowerPoint’s bias for talk-and-click mode is evidenced in how the pro- gram lets you work with audio. The slide-timing device lacks split-second accuracy.
microsoft’s MovieMaker
.ppt (PowerPoint Presentation)
MovieMaker is Window’s free video- editing software that comes installed on new PCs. IMicrosoft has evolved this application very well, whereas Apple has devolved its comparable iMovie software to the point where
Presentations can be saved and run in a number of file formats: PPT (the default format), PPS (for PowerPoint Show), and POT (a format for Power- Point templates).
iMovie is designed primarily for video, although it works well with slides. The iLife ’08 verison, sampled above, has a Project Library that holds all your movies and slide shows. The Project Viewer works with the Viewer to show all the slides in a show. A Tool Bar is conveniently placed above the Source Window, which here contains Slides. The Events Library logs transitions and special effects.
it is too automatic for really creative work. With MovieMaker you can edit videos and import stills and layouts. On the sound side, you can sequence and edit narration, music, and sound effects (SFX).
and other applications like it are mainly for editing videos. Slide shows are secondary. Toolbar has the standard items. The Transitions Pane is open here. Note the rich variety of transition effects and how they are clearly visualized. To the right is the main Panes window where you see what’s on the screen. Storyboard/Timeline lets you work with images in order, or via a time line that logs tasks to be performed at a specific time during a prerecorded track. The time is displayed as a time code.

CHAPTER 5: SLIDE SHOWS

Apple’s iMovie is a giveaway applica- tion that comes bundled in all new Macs as part of a suite of consumer- level software called iLife.
.mov (QuickTime)
The latest version of iMovie has been dumbed down from earlier ver- sions. No longer is there a time line on which you can put down marks that are perfectly in sync with a music track. No longer is there a semi- precise control of the clock—down to frames within a second of time.
MOV is a multiplatform file format that contains tracks that store differ- ent kinds of data: audio, video, ef- fects, or on-screen text. QuickTime is well suited for editing, exporting, and the playback of slide shows, audio files, and videos.
