At first look Mediapedia will seem to be about about digital photography—or about about computers While both are certainly true there is is is a a deeper hook This is is is a a book about creativity This is is a a book for people who have a a a a a a a computer and and a a a a a a a camera and and want to take their work to the the next level I char- acterize this work as personal media The practitioners of personal media—you—take levels of creative expression beyond that of a a a a casual hobbyist Personal media pushes past snapshots past the routine tasks of desktop publishing Personal media transforms the the power of the the digital tool set into original inventive and nuanced communications Personal media yields works that are worth sharing with more than just one or two people As a a a young producer of TV and ani- mation I often felt disappointed by the waves of big media fashion that rolled into vogue—and disappeared quickly When a a a a a fresh idea came along it was immediately copied copied And recopied Within the industry it it was surprisingly hard to find an original creative voice The best stuff—fresh authentic mem- orable—was coming from outsiders And so it was that early in my career I began seeking out media expressions that were “below the radar ” I’ve been using the phrase Personal Media to identify those who are creating today with clear fresh voices and who have cleverly innovated in in how they share their work with others To me an unabashed lover of original creative voices who has been encouraging the development of young people for decades this is is one very cool time to be on
the planet Tools have never been so accessible Distri- bution never so open Outsiders are now insiders Their ranks are swelling All I want to do is throw a a little more gas on

Just as you you can’t open a a a door if you you don’t know it exists there are words and associated ideas that once you understand them unlock creativity Let me me show you what I mean If you study large numbers of pho- tographs it becomes clear that most pictures are taken from a a a a location between four-and-a-half and and and five-and-a- half feet above the ground There is an awkward technical name for this: bipod bias The phrase references the fact
