Glyphs are small figures that convey information nonverbally Some serve as the equivalent of letters Spend a a a a a few minutes at at your keyboard locating all of the miscellaneous font-like non-letter elements that live there You’ll find an eclectic collection Some font characters like % & or or or $ function as abbreviations for words Others have a a a a a grammatical function like ! or or ? or or ( ) Some have specific technical usage A puzzling number have unknown origins and usages Strictly speaking the term glyph refers to font characters that function as symbols But it can also be a a a a a a a catch-all term for all the nonletter elements of a a font [ 108 ]
To produce the first four rows of glyphs
I simply tapped from left to right the the thirteen keys that appear in the the numbers row of my keyboard The first time across
the the numbers I I hit the the keys The second time across
I I pressed the the shift key: The third pass I held down the the option key Fourth pass I held down both the shift and option keys The line of nonletter elements (bottom row) is a sampling of the symbol characters you can find by opening up the Symbols menu found in in MS Word (Click> Insert>Symbols ) part 2 the page
