S d is the founder and Executive Director of the Bee Girl organi-
zation, a nonprofit with a mission to educate and inspire communities to con-
serve bees, their flowers, and our food. Bee Girl projects are focused on regen-
erative beekeeping, bee habitat research and education, and kids’ programs.
She is a graduate of the University of Montana's College of Forestry and Con-
servation with a degree in Resource Conservation, focused on community col-
laboration and environmental policy. Sarah also serves as the “Kids and Bees”
program director for the American Beekeeping Federation. In addition, she is
excited to have begun her tenure as the Western Apicultural Society’s 42nd
president. She will do her best to represent beekeepers of the Western states
with integrity, and will host the 2019 WAS conference in Ashland, Oregon.
When she is not tirelessly working with bees, beekeepers, kids, farmers, land
managers, and policy makers, Sarah loves to read historical fiction, ride her
bike, hike in the hills, see new places and things, people watch, and snuggle
any animal that she can catch (like the tiny frog in the picture to the left).
Alessandro Broido first discovered his love for nature and working with young people
while volunteering in a rural Honduran community as a teenager. After building a life-
changing relationship with his host family, he continued to work with the youth-leadership
organization Amigos de las Americas for three additional seasons in Mexico, Ecuador and
most recently in Costa Rica directing cross-cultural volunteer trail projects in Carara Na-
tional Park. Alessandro has earned two graduate degrees, a Master of Science in Environ-
mental Education and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Southern Oregon University. To-
day, Alessandro enjoys surfing, climbing, hiking, traveling, searching for reptiles and am-
phibians, and playing music. He teaches 4th grade at Jewett Elementary in a bilingual Two-
Way Spanish Immersion classroom.
Ashley Mitchell is a teacher and artist living in Missoula, Montana with her potty-trained
bunny. Her lifelong love of all things creative has given her the opportunity to design not
only book illustrations but also large murals, tattoos, logos, county fair posters, and every-
thing in between. This eagerness to create is a value she works to instill in her students.
When she is not in her studio or classroom, she is fishing, floating, hiking, biking and gen-
erally enjoying all the outdoor recreation Montana has to offer.
In addition to our sponsors and partner organizations, I’d like to thank a few individuals for their inte-
gral work in producing this handbook: Dr. Dewey Caron, Emeritus Professor of Entomology & Wildlife
