CONTAGIOUS CONDITIONS
HEAD LICE
Signs and Symptoms: Presence of nits/lice on hair shaft and scalp.
Suspicion: If you suspect lice on-site, please take the following steps to ensure that the problem is taken care of as quickly and professionally as possible.
1. Upon first suspicion, call the office to arrange for a lice checker to come to check children at your site. The office staff will prepare a letter to be sent home with all site participants informing parents of the suspected problem.
2. Please contact the parent/guardian of any children whom you suspect are infected immediately and inform him/her of the CTPR lice policy.
a. Infected children must report home upon suspicion.
b. When those infected are free of lice, call the CTPR office to arrange an on-site meeting with a lice checker to
receive clearance to re-enter the program. It is up to the judgment of the lice checker to give participants
permission to come back to the program.
3. When a lice checker is on-site inspecting participants, it is not mandatory that each participant is checked, but it is
encouraged. It is up to the discretion of the participant and his/her parent to be checked. All staff should be checked
by the lice checker as well.
Myth: Lice cannot jump from head to head.
Fact: Head lice transfers very easy from sharing hats, head bands, and ponytail holders!
CONJUNCTIVITIS/PINK EYE
Signs and Symptoms: Redness and irritation of eyes, sensitivity of eyes to light, and discharge of the eye
Incubation
Variable, dependent upon infecting agent. Pink Eye is transmitted through direct contact with the infected person. The infected person should be under medical care and may return to the site after drainage from eyes has cleared.
Suspicion
If you suspect conjunctivitis/pink eye on-site, please take the following steps to ensure that this infection is stopped before it is passed through your site.
1. Upon suspicion of this infection, contact your supervisor immediately to verify your suspicion.
2. If pink eye is suspected after a supervisor has observed the condition, the child will be sent home with a note
explaining CTPR policy and procedure concerning pink eye.
3. If a child is sent home, a note from a medical professional is necessary upon returning to the site.
4. If staff is exposed, you may attend the township’s medical clinic for treatment. If you choose to attend your family
doctor, the township will not reimburse you for your costs.
RINGWORM
Signs and Symptoms: Itchy, red, raised, scaly patches that may blister or ooze. Patches often have sharply defined edges. They are often redder around the outside and normal skin tone in the center.
Incubation
Skin medication is usually successful at treating ringworm within 4 weeks.
Suspicion
Follow the same steps listed for Pink Eye.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If any site staff suspects a contagious condition, or even a rash that looks suspicious, please contact your supervisor immediately.
When a child is suspected of any of the above contagious conditions (by staff and supervisors) the parent(s) or guardian(s) should be contacted.
If a contagious condition is confirmed, contact the office so that our staff can notify the other families of possible exposure.
