CHAIRPERSON/PRESIDENT
It is my distinct honor to present this Annual Report highlighting the many successes of CALEA. 2016 saw a continuation of a strong and healthy fiscal picture for CALEA, thanks to outstanding management and leadership, wise financial advice for our
investments, and an engaged and informed group of Commissioners providing oversight and support. Our three Commission Meetings/Conferences were all well attended, and the Commission conducted its business in an efficient and transparent manner. Participation in the accreditation process remains strong and steady. The CALEA process is being cited increasingly as a tool to overcome organizational dysfunction, help in agency “turn-arounds”, and equally as effective in solidifying quality and consistency within excellent agencies.
While the Standards for the Law Enforcement Agencies, 6th Edition wasn’t adopted until the Spring meeting of 2017, most of the groundwork for this was laid during 2016, with countless hours of standards review, engaging subject matter experts and client input. We are proud of the work conducted by the committee led by former Commissioner Lisa Womack, and the Commission is grateful for the abundance of relevant and valuable input in helping to shape the final product.
Executive Director Craig Hartley and his outstanding staff remain highly accessible, and serve the Commission and our client agencies with dedication and distinction. It is truly a privilege to work so closely with the Executive Director and the many CALEA employees who work behind the scenes to ensure that the needs of our accredited agencies are being met, and that the process remains attainable for new client agencies.
Finally, I will take advantage of being Chair of the Commission for a personal observation. 2017 will be my ninth and final year on the Commission due to term limits, and the time has flown by. Looking back I can attest to the quality of leadership of our past Chairs, the remarkable and seamless continuity of transitioning from our former Executive Director Sylvester Daughtry to our current executive director, and most of all, to the incredible collegiality and dedication of the Commissioners. Each year, we lose a few and gain a few, but the constant is the collective focus on the mission of CALEA, and it has been an honor to serve with the most professional group of colleagues one could ever hope to meet.
