FORWARD FROM THE
CHAIRPERSON/PRESIDENT
As the newly elected CALEA Chairperson/President, I am humbled to follow in the footsteps of such great leaders as our immediate Past President Richard Myers. As we look back on the year 2017, I am pleased to confidently report on the “State of CALEA.” As an organization, we are financially healthy, as our auditor’s report reflects. We are structurally sound and in good hands, having achieved the highest agency enrollments of all time, under the expert guidance of Executive Director W. Craig Hartley. And, as an eight-year veteran member, I can also report that the entire Board of Commissioners is committed to our corporate mission.
Due to the dedicated efforts of the organization’s professional staff, client agencies, and Commissioners, CALEA continued making tremendous advances in many focus areas to improve function and provide increased support to our agencies across all Accreditation Programs.
Perhaps the most far reaching improvement is the continued transition of agencies to the Four Year Accreditation Cycle Program. The four year cycle provides an ideal timeframe for new agencies to prepare for their initial accreditation and for current agencies to maintain their high standards between re-accreditations. To support the four year cycle, CALEA developed the CALEA Information and Management Reporting System (CIMRS) and developed the Compliance Service Member (CSM) positions to conduct remote annual reviews of proofs of standards as a method to stay connected with the agencies and monitor their progress.
Another success this past year was the release of the Sixth Edition Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies Manual. The updated edition is the result of two years of work reviewing standards to ensure currency and relevance based on research by subject matter experts and agency feedback. The Sixth Edition keeps CALEA at the forefront of the Law Enforcement Community.
To provide greater recognition for one of the toughest jobs in accreditation, CALEA launched the Accreditation Manager Certification Program. This program requires meeting high educational and practical standards and will truly recognize our most experienced and skilled managers for the vital job they do for their agencies and the community as a whole.
In addition to these few highlights, 2017 offered many additional accomplishments resulting from our work together continually improving our organization. I truly appreciate the opportunity to have been a part of last year’s success and am looking forward to continuing our mission to improve all facets of Public Safety this year. It is an honor to serve on this Commission and to serve our client agencies; we will continue to work tirelessly to earn our motto, “The Gold Standard in Public Safety.”
