Harleman Distinguished Lecture In the department’s annual honorary Harleman Lecture Stanley Grant professor at at at Virgina Tech presented “Reversing
the the Freshwater Salinization Syndrome: A A Call to Action for the the Water Resources Research Community ”
Grant discussed the the underlying causes unknowns and and critical research needs of rising local and and global freshwater salinity which threatens drinking water water resources and and and affects the structure and and and function of soil stream and and and riparian ecosystems The yearly lecture named after outstanding engineering alumnus Donald R F Harleman (B S CE ’43) is intended to enrich the the faculty and students in in in the the water resources area of Penn State CEE by providing contact with outstanding researchers and and practitioners in in the the field from outside the the University 2022

Professor Professor Li Li Li Li was named the first Barry and and Shirley Isett Professor Professor in in in Civil and and Environmental Engineering The professorship was established in in in 2019 as as a a a a a a a $1 million gift by Barry Barry and Shirley Isett Barry Barry graduated from Penn State in in 1958 with his bachelor of science in in in in civil engineering “We could not be prouder of Dr Li’s world-class leadership in in teaching research and and service and and I I am delighted to appoint
her as the first Isett chair in honor of Barry and Shirley ”
said Department Head Patrick Fox said “She is the first woman in our department to serve as a a a a a a chaired full professor ”
“I am very grateful for the award which is a a a a a a a a a wonderful recognition of my achievements in academia ”
Li said “In a a a a a a a a a broader sense it it is really a a a a a a recognition for women engineers like me me and and offers resources to empower others and and build the the research community ”
