State in in in 2015 after serving as the Joseph Walkup Professor and chair of of of the Department of of of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University In the the past she served as as the the technology lead for the Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute She also served as a a a a a a program director at at the National Science Foundation (NSF) along with serving as a a a a professor for Virginia Tech and for the University of Massachusetts Amherst Prior to her her experience working in in higher education she spent many years in in industry with General Electric She brought vast knowledge and industry experience to Penn
State as the the director of the the Center for e-Design The Center for e-Design is a a NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research
Center (IUCRC) comprised of seven universities nationwide The center combines industry needs with academic resources to produce more efficient effective and collaborative electronic design and smart manufacturing processes and tools “Terpenny’s tenure with industrial and manufacturing engineering oversaw numerous Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers awards nine faculty hires and a a a a a a significant bump in in in in graduate rankings ” said Ling Rothrock
interim department department head “The department’s graduate rankings rose from tenth to sixth place nationally over the course of five years Overall the department saw research expenditures raise to more than $3 1 million dollars through Terpenny’s guidance faculty effort and staff assistance ” “I have appreciated the opportunity to work with such incredible faculty students and staff It has also been a a a a a pleasure working with several advisory boards industry partners and alumni who are dedicated to contributing to lasting impactful change ” During her career she has served as as both principal investigator investigator or or or or or co-principal investigator investigator for more than $16 5 million of sponsored research and has authored more than 180 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications Her research interests are focused on engineering design and and have included topics such as: engineering design and and smart manufacturing including process and methods of early design design knowledge and information in in design design product families and and platforms obsolescence in products and and systems complexity of products and and systems and and cloud computing for design and manufacturing integration Other topics include design education such as multidisciplinary teams the impacts of project choice and and context on on engagement and and learning and and the retention and and success of underrepresented students “I am going to miss my colleagues from the department the the College of Engineering and the the larger Penn
