1      Who Am I?
                                               CHAPTER                                               UP AND  AWARE - 6

                                                             (Self-awareness)



                        Beginning:




                       When  an  animal sees its own  reflection  in a  mirror,  it is unable  to
                       recognise itself. Most animals, when shown a mirror, think they are
                       facing  a  member  of  their  species. Only  the  apes—gorillas,  orangutans

                       and  chimps—are  capable  of recognising  themselves in the  mirror.
                       We can identify ourselves as us from as young as nine months
                       of age!
