     Cross at San Pedro Cemetery
A symbol of FAITH, LOVE and HOPE
In February 2025 a 13 foot cross was built in the Bob Cikanek Carpentry Shop.
The cross placed at the edge of the gigantic cemetery on the edge of the San
Pedro community on the outskirts of Chimbote will support families for years
to come. Because of the size of the cemetery and the lack of lasting individual
grave markers, families visiting the cemetery will use the cross as a place to
place flowers and sit in prayer and reflection. Bishop Ernesto and Bishop Folda
blessed the cross and acknowledged the importance of honoring those who
have passed away with dignity and respect. The plaque placed on the cross
      reads...
“This Cross, a symbol of faith and hope, represents the spiritual
unity and strength of our community. May its presence bring peace
and comfort to those who contemplate it, always reminding us of
the light and hope that guide us.”
The size of the cemetery and the number of nameless graves is overwhelming.
During the height of the COVID crisis, mass graves were used to bury the dead. The dedication of the cross ceremony was
very moving as it connected us to the poverty in the area in a visceral way. For even in death, the families of the extreme
poor feel the poverty in ways we cannot imagine, as they place their loved ones in the earth with little if any ceremony and
often no physical marker left to memorialize their final resting place. With the shared cross this is not all relieved, there is
however, some dignity brought forward for families as they return to pray on death anniversaries and feasts like All Souls Day
      in November.

                                                                       by Charleen Herrick, ACAF
The cross is a symbol of faith, love, and hope. It represents sacrifice
redemption, and the promise of eternal life, offering comfort to those
who have lost a loved one. At San Pedro Cemetery, this cross-donated by
Friends of Chimbote and ACAF - Serves as a reminder of God’s presence
and the love that unites families beyond earthly life.
What makes it even more special is its material. It was built using the same
wood as the prefabricated houses that are built for families in vulnerable
situations. This symbolizes the effort and solidarity that have provided a
dignified home to those most in need.
More than just a physical structure, this cross represents the love, solidarity,
and hope that continues to illuminate the path of our community.
                                                  Reflection on John 11:25’26
Jesus reminds us that He is the source of eternal life and the hope amid
pain. It is not only a promise for the future but a present truth: those who
believe in Him have a life that transcends death. This faith calls us to live
with purpose, reflecting love and compassion in every action.
