 Public Frameworks vs. Proprietary Knowledge
Public Frameworks offer a starting point for use in building the most effective system of management for your
organization.
Proprietary Knowledge are often:
• Deeply embedded within the organization where knowledge was developed. Often in the form of tacit knowledge learned over time, and undocumented.
• Customized for local context and specific business needs to the point of being non-transferrable to other organizations.
• Proprietary knowledge is owned by the creator of that knowledge and may not be made available (trade secrets).
Public Frameworks are:
• Validated over a wide audience in many environments. Processes may have to be modified for your organization, but the starting point allows organizations the ability to “not re-invent” the wheel.
• Vetted by a diverse set of partners, suppliers, competitors, educational institutions, accreditation agencies, and standards organizations.
• More widely distributed among a larger community of professionals.
• Training and consulting generally available for helping with modifications.
