Quotas
Quotas are used to restrict the amount of disk space occupied by users or groups.
Quotas regulate disk computation of users.
Quotas improve system performance.
Group level quota can be applied to primary groups.
Quotas can be applied on quota enabled partitions.
Quotas can be applied in 2 types are
On the basis of no of inodes / files
On the basis of no of blocks / disk space.
To apply blocks quota block size of partition is needed.
Quota allows Administrator to specify restriction in two ways:
Restricting a user or a group by creating files in a specific location.
Restricting a user or a group by the disk space in a specific location.
Advantages of Quotas
The idea behind quotas is that users are forced to stay under their disk consumption limit or with
number of files in a particular location.
Quota is handled on a per user, per file system basis.
Types of Quotas
Quotas are of two types:
User level quotas - usrquota
Group level quotas - grpquota
Quotas Limits
There are two Quotas limits
Soft – Soft quota limits will only warn the user that they have reached their quotas limits.
Hard – Hard quota limits will not allow the user to create any more files or directories once the quota
limit has been reached.
