ERIC COATRIEUX - CONTINUED FROM PAGE 32
The Queen’s Plate was the first Stakes win for Chiefswood Stables and was the first Queen’s Plate win for veteran jockey Rob Landry and trainer Eric Coatrieux. After the initial wave of excitement reached the shore everyone regrouped and looked towards winning the Prince of Wales Stakes. Eric says that during the race it was heartbreaking to see Niigon lose focus, “there wasn’t anything anybody could have done for him. He lost the race on his own, nobody could have helped him.” said Eric.
After the Prince of Wales, Niigon ran against the best three year olds in the continent at Saratoga, in New York where he gave a valiant effort. Eric considered all the options available to him at the time, and it was decided to give him a chance to run in the Pennsylvania Derby where he finished fourth.
Prior to that race Niigon had lost weight and looked tired. He had a long demanding season, so Eric decided to ease up on him and he sent him to the farm to freshened up. He resumed light training in November in Florida and upon inspection in early January he looks terrific.
Eric feels that Niigon is a late developing horse and that the best is yet to come. Already this year, at age four, he has developed into a more mature horse, “I feel that he deserves a chance to run on the turf,” said Eric in an interview in the barn at Palm Meadows, “he is certainly bred to run on it since the dam is by Nureyev and he has indicated that he could be a nice turf horse but nothing is for sure.”
January 9 Niigon worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.20 at Palm Meadows under regular jockey Rob Landry and Eric was pleased with the work and says that as things stand right now Niigon is about six weeks away from his 2005 debut which will probably be an allowance race in February.
Depending on the outcome of that race he will be pointed toward either the Gr. 2, Gulfstream Park Handicap, a mile and three sixteenth on the dirt; the Gr. 1 Gulfstream Breeders Cup Handicap which is a mile and three eights on the turf; or the Gr. 2 Pan American Handicap, which is a mile and a half on the turf.
Eric will see how he progresses before making any definite plans. Niigon is the “star” of the barn however Eric is really excited about some Chiefswood’s two year olds which are currently in training in Ocala under the supervision of Bill Recio. Eric also mentioned a couple of un-raced three-year-old fillies that look promising for 2005: Remsheg, an exceptional filly by Unbridled and Seanachai, a daughter of El Prado.
As the horses routinely make their way to the training track through the early morning fog at Palm Meadows Eric looks as though he is ready to tackle the challenge of bringing home another rewarding season in 2005.
