Book Review by Harlan Abbey
BACKHANDER - By John Francome. Published by Headline, in England. 313 pp. L/ 16.99.
In North America, racing fans have been waiting the last few years for a successor to former 'chase jockey turned best- selling racing mystery writer Dick Francis, now retired from the pen/typewriter/computer. But England has been aware of John Francome, a former 'chase champion and TV racing host, for some time. But on this side of the Atlantic he has remained a mystery man.
"Backhander" is Francome's 19th book (four written with James MacGregor) and it's has as many plot twists as a corkscrew. There's Max, a weakish amateur jockey whose father is fabulously wealthy. There's Alan, another amateur rider whose plans to be a bloodstock agent are hammered when his partner dies in a fall and he's left with an expensive horse whose would-be owner backs out of the deal. There's Tim, who has reformed the dangerous and willful Black Mountain into a promising steeplechaser; Victor, a vicious criminal; Cherry, his ex-girlfriend now involved with Max; and Roisin, Tim's daughter who is involved with Lewis. In addition to Black Mountain, the other major four-legged character is Grains of Sand ("Sandy"), another up-and-coming jumper.
The book starts out with a murder. Then comes the fatal fall of Noel, Alan's partner, when his mount suddenly weakens. The same thing happens to one of Alan's rides when he recovers from an injury. So there's plenty of mystery to go around. Ane even an accidental death. But one thing different from the Dick Francis novels is that Francome's main characters don't encounter as many near-death situations -- except for their steeplechase falls. And Francome seems to give as much space to making the bad guys as many-faceted as the good guys. The climax of "Backhander" is when Alan winds up riding Black Mountain against his former mount, Grains of Sand, in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.
