On Sunday, May 8 Speedy Comet won the 4th race at Fort Erie, going 4 1/2 furlongs in 51 4/5 seconds. The fol- lowing day, May 9, Jonah Magic won the 10th at Fort Erie in 51 4/5 seconds at the same distance.
The horses share the record.
However if you look at the times in 100th of a second it will explain why Speedy Comet is named the record holder at a distance which has not been written at Fort Erie in a number of years.
The 4 1/2-furlong track record was first established in 1968 when Trade Wagon was clocked in 52 seconds flat. The record was equaled twice in 1971, first by Dawn Deluxe (April 17), then a week later by Dozen Dancer (April 24).
Seven-year-old Speedy Comet’s trainer, Stacey Cooper, says she knew the horses were going to go fast that day because Oh Mar, Fort Erie’s 5 furlong track record holder, was also in the race. Oh Mar finished sec- ond. Speedy Comet is owned by Nick Mileni Jr. and was ridden that day by jockey Tyrone Harding.
Jonah Magic is trained by Myckie Neubauer for owner R.M.C. Stable and was ridden by jockey Brian Bochinski.
