BC Sale Toppers purchased by Leo and Norma Shaw
Two colts shared the title as sale topper for the British Columbia CTHS Yearling & Mixed Sale, held at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley on September 11, 2007.
Buyers Leo and Norma Shaw paid $50,000 each for the colts: Hip No. 86, a gray or roan colt by Canada’s leading first crop sire Finality (Dehere) out of the multiple stakes winning mare and former BC Champion, Grey Tobe Free (Free at Last) from the Red Rock Farm consignment; Hip No. 88, a dark bay or brown colt named Waylaid in L.A. who is by a son of Storm Cat, Stormin Fever out of a successful mare, Hawk Cliff. He was consigned by agent Tom Longstaff for owner Dan Sutherland.
Other sales of note were Hip No. 104, a bay colt by Gilded Time - Justfor Lindsayloo, was purchased for $44,000 by Elizabeth Brandt off of last year’s leading consignor Orange Blossom Farm.
Orange Blossom also received the highest bid of the sale, $74,500 for Hip No. 80 however the bid did not meet the reserve and there was no sale.
Hip No. 135 also sold for $44,000. Consigned by agent Roxanne Sargent, the gray or roan colt is one of the first crop yearlings for G1 Stakes Winning stallion, Joey Franco out of the mare Nora Ellen. He was purchased by Sanduz Stables.
The over-all result of this year’s sale was disappointing despite the announcement at the beginning of the auction from Great Canadian Gaming Corporation’s Ross McLeod, that the long-awaited slot machines will be operational at Hastings Racecourse by October 1.
According the the CTHS British Columbia website the sale concluded with decreases in gross and average, which they say is reflective of a trend felt throughout the North American auction scene this year. The website contained the following in their press release ...“A total of 102 horses sold for a gross of $1,129,150 producing an average of $11,070 compared to $11,517 in 2006 when 138 horses purchased obtained a gross of $1,589,350. This year's increase in RNA's was the biggest disappointment with 84 horses returning home compared to 62 last year. Consignors frowns were matched by the smiles of some satisfied buyers as several potential champions appeared to be bought well.
Like real estate and the stock market, trends in Thoroughbred sales travel a roller-coaster path. Declines in sales have occurred in the past, but trends take different directions, and as it has before, the local sales market will undoubtedly swing upward again.”
