Jambalaya Retired for Season with Injury
Bear Now wins the $750,000 Cotillion in Philly
The Catherine Day Phillips’ Kingfield Farms owned, Jambalaya, pictured here after winning the G1 Arlington Million at Arlington Park August 11, was given a free pass to the Breeders’ Cup with the new NTRA “Win and You’re In” pro- gram.
However it was announced on September 20, that the multiple grade 1 stakes winner has been retired for the rest of the year due to an acute bone bruise on the end of the cannon bone in his right front leg.
Pictured right is Trainer and owner Catherine Day Phillips embracing her husband Todd after Jambalaya’s win with jockey Robby Albarado aboard.
Similar to his win in Florida,
Jambalaya was in tight on the rail during
the stretch run at Arlington. When he was finally given a seam he sprinted to the front to beat the heavily favoured (and last year’s Million winner) The Tin Man by a length and three-quarters.
Bear Now, Danny Dion’s Bear Stables owned 3-year-old filly, had plenty of stamina to hold off the heavily favoured Octave, and go wire to wire in the $750,000 G2 Fitz Dixon Cotillion Handicap at Philadelphia Park, Sept 22, 2007.
It was excitement all around after Bear Now’s win as (from left to right) Trainer Reade Baker & his wife Janis Maine, Jockey Jerry Baird and Owner Danny Dion of his Bear Stables, accept the trophy from the widow of the race’s namesake, Fitz Dixon Cotillion.
