Marchfield Wins Breeders’ Stakes
Amazing Corn
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on September 6 at Boonstra Farms near Stonewall, Manitoba
a 15-minute drive north of Winnipeg to officially open the
biggest corn maze in Canada. Assiniboia Downs joined with Murray's Maze to produce an historical first: the "biggest" horse race in the world. Two dueling horses have been carved into 15 acres of corn.
Visitors are escorted into the maze with a GPS system (so they don't get lost) and there is also a lookout bridge at the centre of the maze, which is part of a horse's belly.
Assiniboia Downs is seeing a resurgence of interest in "the hottest game in town," with increases in attendance and wagering. They decided to use this giant depiction of horses as a pre-launch to celebrations leading to its 50th anniversary year.
The 2008 live racing season at Assiniboia ended on September 23.
Trainer Mark Casse (right) and Assistant Trainer Ricky Griffiths, lead the Melnyk Racing Stable owned, Marchfield, to the winners enclosure after winning the $500,000 Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine on August 5, 2007.
Jockey Patrick Husbands was aboard the 3 year-old colt by A.P. Indy - Pico Teneriffe, by Red Ransom who is an Ontario homebred of owner Eugene Melnyk. The Breeders’ Stakes is the third leg in Canada’s Triple series.
2007 saw the first time that the Triple Crown Series was contested over three different race surfaces, The Queen’s Plate at Woodbine on Polytrack, the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on dirt, and the Breeders Stakes at Woodbine on the turf.
The three Triple Crown races were
also won by three different horses in 2007 with Mike Fox in the Plate, Allezzandro in the Prince of Wales and Marchfield in the Breeders’.
