Keeneland January Ends with Record Receipts
The Keeneland January horses of all ages sale finished up on January 15 with record total receipts of $72,868,200, an increase of 0.7% over last year’s record sale.
This year’s sale was expanded to 8 days with a record 1,862 horses sold, which was likely the cause of the reported overall average price declining 11.6% and the median dropping 6.3% from 2006. The buyback rate rose 1% over last year as well.
Taylor Made Sales Agency was leading consignor for the seventh consecutive year, selling 152 horses for $7,550,800. John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Bloodstock signed 12 sales chits worth $2,961,000 which included the $1.8 million sale topper (Gr1 winning 3-yr-old filly Point Asjhley, by Point Given) to become the leading buyer at the sale.
A Distorted Humor colt was the highest priced yearling purchased for $500,000 by Stonestreet Stable.

Breeders’ Cup Runneth Over
Clearly feeling that bigger and more is better, the Breeders’ Cup Ltd. has announced a dynamic new expansion to the running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The most dramatic change is that three more races have been added to the program, and this has resulted in a second day of Championship Racing.
The Board of Directors has approved this expansion for the 2007 event which will now comprise two days of extraordinary racing at Monmouth Park on October 26-27.
On Friday, October 26, three new races will be added to that day’s card brining the total purse up to $4million, making it the second most lucrative racing
day in North America. The richest day, of course, will be Saturday, October 27, when the purses will be worth $20million.
The three newly created races will be:
$1Million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile for 3YO & Up $1Million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at 6 furlongs
$1Million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf for
2YO Colts, Geldings and Fillies at a Mile
For this year only, the new dirt race will actually
be run at a mile and 70 yards and the Filly and Mare Sprint will be at 7 furlongs. This is because the configuration of Monmouth’s track does not comfortably allow the designated distances.
The card for the Saturday events remains similar to last year’s running and the races will be as follows:
Race
$5M BC Classic-Powered by Dodge $3M John Deere BC Turf
$2M Juvenile Fillies
$2M Bessemer Trust BC Juvenile $2M Emirates Airline BC F&M Turf $2M NetJets BC Mile
$2M TVG BC Sprint

Horse Fans Pick Barbaro in an All-Moments Triactor
Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was clearly uppermost in the minds of horse racing fans in 2006. In a poll conducted at www.ntra.com by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association to determine the most popular moments of the year, voters put Barbaro first, second and third.
Finishing first and garnering 29% of the on-line votes was the story of Barbaro‚s brave recovery at the New Bolton Centre from the leg he shattered in the Preakness. Very close in second (27%) was Barabaro’s authoritative 6 1/2 length victory in the Kentucky Derby. Barbaro completed the unique
triactor by receiving 22% of the votes for the moment early on in the Preakness when he broke down.
Russell Baze’s record- breaking ride on Butterfly Belle that gave him the all-time wins record with 9531, surpassing the legendary Laffitt Pincay, was a distant fourth in the voting with 7%.
Barbaro’s connections, along with the staff at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine were honored with the NTRA Moment of the Year at the Eclipse Awards Dinner on January 22 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Stupid Trainer Tricks
Veterinarian Jay Stewart had a court date in late January after being charged with four counts of attempting to influence a race by tampering with a horse. It’s alleged that Stewart administered vodka to horses in 2005. The horses in question were racing at Fonner Park in Grand Island, near Omaha Nebraska. Apparently, the vodka was given to horses to calm their nerves before races.
