The other thing that can often be a gamble at the track is the relationship between assistants and trainers. Without expressing resentment, Lee says his situation with Tino Attard didn’t work out.
“After the last racing day at Fort Erie, I stayed for one day to clean up the stalls. I got to Woodbine on the Friday, unloaded the trailer and I saddled a horse for Tino for the fourth race on the Friday. The next day, Saturday, I didn’t feel well and I couldn’t make it to work. On Sunday, I went in and he told me he didn’t need me anymore.”
Many people in similar circumstances have discovered this turn of events to be the best thing to happen to them. Lee will now be forced to forge out a career by himself.
“I took out some business cards and I’m planning on some public training,” he says, “I’m just waiting. Hopefully I can get some clients in the spring.”
Above all, Lee remains optimistic, and with good reason.
“I proved it last year that I can go to Fort Erie and do the job on my own,” he says proudly, “You pick broken down horses and you take your time with them and get them to the races and you put them in the right spots. You give them all the help you can give them.”
Beresford Lee strikes you as the type of man who is not easily discouraged, a pretty solid example of the glass-is-half- full character from which the racing game benefits.
“I love racing. I think it’s a great sport,” he declares, “There’s lots of money in the game if you know how to play it. I’m predicting a profitable 2007 for myself.”
