The end of September ~ The Scribe ~ winner Bago well inside
saw some top class events
staged in Europe starting
with the Newmarket meet-
ing in England which had
the running of the grade 1 Cheveley Park Stakes in which Michael Kinane squeezed Donna Blini to a narrow victory over Wake Up Maggie and Flashy Wings.
That race was for juvenile fillies and the colt’s equivalent the Middle Park Stakes was won in good style by Kevin Ryan’s Amadeus Wolf. The disappointing favourite, Ivan Denisovich, could not cope with the soft going and finished fourth for Ballydoyle.
Michael Stoute saddled Peeress to win the grade 1 Sun Chariot Stakes for fillies three years old and upwards.
On the same afternoon the big Longchamp meeting commenced with a win for Ed Dunlop’s Court Masterpiece in the grade 1 Prix de La Foret. He just got the better of Irish challenger Caradak which in turn was a head in front of Mirabilis.
The Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe was the feature at Longchamp on October 2 and it produced a brilliant performance from Irish Derby winner Hurricane Run. The colt is trained by Andre Fabre but was ridden by Kieren Fallon who brought him with a tremendous late run to sweep past Westerner and last year’s
the final furlong.
It was a good day for
those associated with
Ballydoyle as Michael Tabor and John Magnier bought Hurricane run before his Irish classic victory and also enjoyed two other
grade one winners on the day.
Rumplestiltskin outclassed the opposition in the
Prix Marcel Boussac while Horatio Nelson defeated the English challenger Opera Cape in the Grand Criterium.
English runners also did well at the big French meeting with Avonbridge taking the grade 1 Prix de L’Abbaye over five furlongs for Roger Charlton and Kinnairdbeating two Irish trained fillies Mona Lisa and Alexander Goldrun in the Prix de L’Opera.
Irish runner Common World won the grade 3 Grosser Preis de West in Germany and Dermot Weld saddled two listed winning fillies at Cologne when Society Hostess and Burren Rose proved successful.
The mid October Newmarket meeting saw Sir Percy beat Horatio Nelson in the grade 1 Dewhurst Stakes for juveniles and a huge shock in the Chempion Stakes when 25/1 chance David Junior beat off Pride and Marashel . Oratorio started favourite but was denied a run until the race was all over and had to settle for fourth place.
European Update
New In Review
• Five-year-old Champion juvenile, Added Edge (Smart Strike - Sweet Nostalgia) has been retired and that stud plans are still being finalized. In his 2-year- old campaign in 2002, Added Edge began his career with four straight wins along with the Gr.3 Nashua Stakes in Aqueduct.
• 4-year-old Champion Sprinter, homebred filly, Blonde Executive will be heading for the breeding shed for owners Bruno Brothers Farm. Blonde Executive sustained an injury in October 2004 and did not return to the racetrack until June 2005 however a work on July 23 was her last as the decision was made to retire her after “a bit of a problem again.” Blonde Executive won 8 of 13 starts for trainer Radlie Loney, all ridden by jockey Richard DosRamos, and had earnings of $610,591.
Radlie is currently training her full brother, Main Executive (Bold Executive-Dream Smartly) who looks to be another solid racehorse.
• Magna Entertainment Corp. (MEC) announced in October, a joint venture with Forest City Enterprises to develop the second phase of the $1 billion make-over
at Gulfsteam Park in Florida. Forest City will construct 250 highend condominiums and will devel- op 400,000 square feet of retail shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and office space on the land adjacent to the racetrack.
The Frank Stronach owned MEC is scheduled to have completed a $170 million overhaul of Gulfstream’s grandstand, clubhouse, barns and track by opening day on January 4, 2006. The second phase should be ready by Fall of 2007
• Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone gave birth to an 8 pound, 9 ounce baby girl in late September after retiring in 2004 with 3,704 career wins. The 42-year- old Krone has named her daughter, Lorelei Judith.
• Stallion Mt. Livermore (Blushing Groom {Fr}-- Flama Ardiente, by Crimson Satan) has be pensioned from stud duty at age 24 due to declining fertility. He stood at Gainesway Farm for $25,000 in 2005 and is the sire of two Eclipse Award winning sprinters, Housebuster and Orientate (who also stands at Gainesway) as well as champion two-year-old filly Eliza.
Did You Know.....
That Nick and Pauline Felicella, are the owners of Nick’s Spaghetti House on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. Walking into the popular eatery you
will see win pictures hanging on the wall of their Gr.3 BC Derby winner Spaghetti Mouse who holds a prominent spot on the wall.
For longtime horse owners Nick and Pauline, who got involved in horseracing in 1979, winning the BC Derby was a highlight of their
years as owners.
After the Derby win, the Felicella’s treated
the staff of trainer Gary Demorest
to a spectacular feast at the restaurant which has been in operation since 1955.
