New In Review
• Jim McAlpine steps down from MEC
According to an article in the Toronto Star, Jim McAlpine has retired as an officer and director of Magna Entertainment Corp (MEC), owned by Frank Stronach.
The 58 year old McAlpine, who looked after the finances of Frank Stronach’s Magna International until 2001 when he took on the position of CEO of Magna Entertainment Corp., will continue on as a strategic advisor under a consulting agreement.
MEC is the largest owner and operator of horse race tracks in North America including Gulfstream Park in Florida and Santa Anita in California.
• Equine Flu jumps species to Dogs
According to an article published in the September 30, Toronto Star, it has been reported that a strain of influenza has jumped from horses to dogs, with a potentially fatal outcome.
The virus is said to have roots in the greyhound racing tracks in Florida and New York States.
With fears of the virus spreading to Canada, the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association has issued a communique to its members asking them to report immediately any clinical signs of the disease in Canada.
Veterinarians were made aware of the influenza virus jumping species in an arti- cle published in Science magazine which said that a study shows that the virus, which has been in the U.S. for at least five years, kills dogs in 10 per cent of the reported cases. The symptoms are similar to other respiratory diseases and include fever, coughing and sneezing.
• According to a report released by the Jockey Club out of Kentucky, 58,739 mares were covered by 3,097 stallions in 2005 based on reports received as of October 13, which represents 90% of mare bred in 2005. The numbers represented a decrease in both categories with the number of stallions down 4.4% (3,239 in 2004) and the number of mares down 1% (59,342 in 2004).
126 stallions covered 100 or more mares this year while four stallions, all from Ashford Stud in KY, covered 200 or more mares in 2005. They include a record setting 233 mares covered by stallion Lion Heart, followed by Chapel Royal at 222, Giant’s Causeway at 215 and Fusaichi Pegasus at 213 mares bred this year.
• Nineteen-year-old stallion, With Approval, has been sold to Lanwades Stud by the syndicate. With Approval formerly stood at Brookdale Farm in Kentucky and officially arrived at his new home in Newmarket, England in August. With Approval was the winner of the Canadian Triple Crown and was Horse of the Year in 1989 for owner Kinghaven Farm and trainer Roger Attfield. He is the sire of 42 stakes winners, plus the earners of $34 million, half of which are turf runners including the now sire, Talkin Man.
