41. Bowline on a Bight
The diverse and immensely useful bowline family deserves an “on the
bight” version. This knot has the advantages of a standard Bowline with the
additional benefit of doubled line in both the standing part and in the loop
for extra strength and reliability. It can’t possibly slip, and the two fixed-
size loops can fit around your thighs as part of a harness for climbing,
rescue, or raising a sailor up a mast.
Uses: lifting, hauling, safety, climbing
Pros: very secure and strong, easy to untie; loops may be used together or separately
Cons: relies on both strands of the standing part for support; don’t haul or support with only one strand
