ADJECTIVE
Meaning: a member of a class of words functioning as modifiers of nouns,
typically by describing, delimiting, or specifying quantity.
Some adjectives can be identified by their endings. Typical adjective endings
include:
-able/-ible achievab’e, capabIe iIegibIe remarkable
-al biographical functionad ,internal, logical
-ful beautiful, carefui, grateful harmful
-ic cubiç manic rustic; terrific
-ive attractive, dismissive, inventive,
persuasive
-less bteathless, careless, groundless, restiess
-ous courageous, don gerous, dssastrous,
fabulous
However a large number of very common adjectives cannot be Identified in this
way. They do not have typkal adjectival form:
Bad Distant Quist
Bright Elementary Real
Clever Good Red
Cold Great Silent
Common Honest Simple
Complete Hot Strange
Dark Main Wicked
Deep Morose Wide
Difficult Old Young
As this list shows, adjectives are formally very diverse. However, they have a
number of characteristics which we can use to identify them.
Characteristics of Adjectives
Adjectives can take a modifying word, such as very, eirremely, or less, before
them:
