Page 32 - Imagination: The Art of Charles Keeling Lassiter
P. 32
You may suddenly "see" something that you have never "seen" before (it is possible to
see without seeing when we only superficially engage with a painting).
Art is more than the skill of its creator or the interest of its subject matter. Important
art has an interactive emotional gravity to it. With Lassiter, his emotions are in each
painting and the paintings themselves evoke emotion in the viewer. Owning a
Lassiter makes you feel good - this is 'real' art, not decorator art. A Lassiter enriches
your environment and it is a pleasure to share a Lassiter with others.
What is Lassiter's concept or idea behind his paintings? It is a unique blending of a
special technique of painting, a magical fusion of chaos and order, and a
mixed-meaning narrative resulting in some of the most interesting and captivating art
of post 1945. Immediately recognizable, a Lassiter is a Lassiter is a Lassiter.
Lassiter's unique technique - substrate preparation with mixed-media producing
'cosmic colors' - combinations of colors which have never before seen in art history.
His 'chaotic order' is accomplished with his fleeting lines. Lassiter is bringing 'chaotic
order' into his play of colors, figures and scenes, which seem to come alive. His form
of "Action Painting" requires a great deal of discipline in creating and a great talent.
Charles Lassiter is the master of it. The narrative of each work is almost a
contemporary Rorschach of moving forms and colors allowing the viewer to perceive
multiple meanings and many stories in each painting.
Lassiter's talent, passion and love of life are obvious.
