The African Union Sports Council (AUSC)
Region 5 was established with the aim of champion-
ing the development of sports and recreation in the
Region 5. Previously, it used to be known as Supreme
Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) Zone VI until on
November 8, 2013 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe when the
body changed to AUSC.
The African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 is
one of the five Regions in Africa entrusted with the
responsibility of developing sports under the African
Union. Members of the region are Angola, Botswana,
Comoros, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia,
South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The AUSC Region 5 Council of Ministers (which
consist of sports Ministers from all 11 member coun-
tries) adopted a five-year development plan at their
23rd meeting in November 1997 in Cabinda, Angola.
One of the projects in the development plan was the
organization and hosting of AUSC Region 5 games for
athletes below the age of 20 every two years.
At their special meeting held in Johannesburg, South
Africa on September 7, 1999 the AUSC Region 5
Council of Ministers agreed that the hosting of the
games shall be compulsory and rotational, and shall be
on the basis of the Chairmanship of the Council of
Ministers. Thus, the country whose Minister is the
Chairperson of the AUSC Region 5 Council of Minis-
ters shall host the games.
The aim of the games is to encourage young sports
persons to develop towards stages where they can in
future represent their nations and the whole region.
The games are also aimed at enabling young people
from di erent member states to meet, mix and get to
know each other, thereby encouraging the required
community spirit and regional integration and also
developing a spirit of fair play, mutual respect and
Olympism among young athletes of the region and
also provide opportunities for countries of the region
to unite in working on an agreed common sports
programe.
