OPTIONAL FOCUS QUESTIONS/SENTENCE STARTERS FOR MENTORS IN
BREAKOUT GROUPS
A good way to have participants engaged in your mentoring session is to have them actively involved in discussion and
conversation.
Authentic discussion with real listening and sharing is the aim, and this is best achieved when the participants are
encouraged to talk about their passions and/or interests.
At times sparking conversation may not be easy though, so having a list of potential sentence starters or focus questions
could be handy for mentors to use as a backup.
The following are general examples of sentence starters that you might use to help you out.
It’s important that you add your own to this list as you get to know the participants in your group.
