DOING A GREA T INTER VIEW
Here are 10 commercial radio tips that ensure that you do a great radio interview…
1. Find out who you are interviewing and research them.
2. Identify your audience and ask questions that they would want answers to.
3. Prepare and rehearse the questions you are going to ask. It’s best to keep your questions
simple.
4. Introduce your guest to your audience by name and title and if appropriate, a short
statement about why you are interviewing them.
5. During the interview listen carefully and ask unscripted follow-up questions.
6. Make eye contact with your guest when asking questions and when they are answering
questions.
7. Half way through your interview reset by reintroducing your guest by name and title again.
8. Use your research in your questions but avoid asking long-winded questions.
9. To avoid moments of on-air silence i.e. Dead Air, make sure you are ready to make a
statement or ask a question the moment your guest has completed their response.
10. Remember the interview is all about the person you are interviewing so allow them to fully
answer the question you have asked them.
AFTER THE INTERVIEW
When the interview is over thank the guest and inform them when the podcast of the interview
will be uploaded online for on-demand listening.
Also politely ask whether you can take a photo of them with the interview panel. This will make a
great social media post across the station’s platforms.
The post will mostly likely be shared by your guest on their social media platforms if you include
their social media handle or tag in your post.
